INTERVIEW WITH PELUMI ADENIJI Of The Clones

THE FRONT MAN OF THE IBADAN BASED ROCK BAND: THE CLONES

The five-man band has been in existence since 2011 and has performed gigs all around western

Nigeria. The Rockazworld team caught up with Pelumi Adeniji, the frontman of the band and we had

a little chit-chat.

RW:  Most people do not know the faces behind the band The Clones, can you give a brief

introduction of yourself?

Pelumi:  My name is Adeniji Pelumi, a graduate of psychology from the prestigious University of

Ibadan .  I am from Ogbomosho in Oyo state and I currently reside in Ibadan.

RW: What instruments do you play and how long have you been playing?

Pelumi: I play the acoustic guitar and I started playing around 2009

RW: Were you in any band before The Clones?

Pelumi: Before University, I was part of an acapella group called Deevees. I brought up the idea of

the band with Kindle who was then my classmate. Ha manages the band now.

RW: Do you write your own songs as a band?

Pelumi: Yes, absolutely. Laolu (guitarist) and I do most of the songwriting.

RW:  What are your songs about and what specific themes do they cover?

Pelumi:  well being a Christian band, our songs are themed over a wide range. From the Christian

faith to young love, to heartbreaks, love for humanity, universal tolerance and just outright out of

the box concepts.

RW: Are they inspired by personal experiences?

Pelumi: yes, some are inspired by personal experiences while others are inspired by the scriptures,

the society and other rock bands.

RW: what other rock bands inspire you?

Pelumi: Skillet, Third Day, Switchfoot, Relient K, Stellar Kart and Mayday Parade

RW: What subgenre of rock would you say you tend towards as a band?

Pelumi: Alternative, Alternative Rock, Alternative Punk

RW: What is your outlook on the Nigerian music industry and the prospects for rock music?

Pelumi: Ah.. to be honest, the industry is seriously booming...but still still lacks the musical quality to  an extent...rock bands will have to do more to get the attention of a wider audience in Nigeria.

RW: How about the poor sound production among Nigerian Rock Bands?

Pelumi: I think I will attribute that to lack of funds to go for the best sound mix engineers.

RW: You think even the best local sound engineers can produce a proper rock song?

Pelumi: YES O! We have seasoned sound mix engineers out there... Sheyman, Foster Zeeno etc..

RW:  Any new material coming from The Clones?

Pelumi: Yes, we have a single in the works titled “FREE ME”, been a long time coming.

RW: Yellow Garri Or Ijebu Garri?

Pelumi: hahahahahahahaha........ Ijebu garri

RW: Thank you very much

Pelumi: Thanks for having me.

A Review of KEEP PUSHING ME by +234

Title: Keep Pushing Me
Artiste: Plus 234
Duration: 2:31
Writers: Michael idiong, Tobi famutimi, Micheal Dadzie
Producer: Raybams (Out Music Producer)
Studio: Just Rock
Release Date: 18 September, 2015

Keep Pushing Me is a song performed by the rock band Plus 234 who officially entered our list of rock bands after the release of their first single Keep Pushing Me released on the 18th September, 2015 and produced by Raybams.
The first thing I felt when I listen to this song was a soothing sense of comfort and calmness attributed to the lead singer Micheal Idiong also known as D’Keither’s single subtle method of delivering this. It was basic, simple it had the 1,2,3 Nigerian beat. The song can be enjoyed by anybody,
Production
I don’t think it was mastered well enough so I’ll really love to hear a re-mastered version of this song as I think it would add more life to the song but I’ll love to commend the fact that it was no over produced especially on the aspect of vocals which is what we have this days, as a fan of live performances I always bother about vocal effect in studios a lot because it makes the artist sound bad live. I love the level of raw vocals used

Sound and Lyrics
The song categorized as Afro Alternative also made use of konga drums which I am a fan of, it immediately remind me of Dido’s instrumental approach to her hit “thank You” especially at the beginning
Lyrically the song sang from a man’s point of view expresses disappointment about a said girl whom he loved and chased for a while, he kept pushing so much and eventually he decided from move on after which he finds her broken and sad, the tables did turn and he begins teasing her in Yoruba, the latter part which I enjoyed
Conclusion
Finally I’ll say they played safe on this but for a first it was the right amount of safe so, I have high expectation for the band being that they are already on the right part so don’t be surprised if I come down on you hard next time

So guys please download and enjoy

GOD OF ROCK

I AM A METAL HEAD
It would be so  cliché of me to say that I enjoy getting drunk, smoking profusely and probably would love to sacrifice some goats (Might add some virgins) to Satan under a full moon: Yeah?
There is a lot in being a fan of rock than meets the eyes, its not just the other stereotype-based theory like ; rock is demonic, only Goths like rock, everyone who loves rock music must be rebellious, have numerous body piercings, tattoos, a Mohawk and a billion boyfriend/girlfriend – no , not all that… ever heard about the God of rock?
Let me enlighten you a little –

Heaven is not all about the hymns and harps, especially when a soul has just been won into the kingdom – OH NO!

Imagine the fog gathering, a cherubim playing the brass guitar which is backed up by Gabriel’s lead guitar; then the drums roll by another cherubim along side with some archangels rocking out with the electric guitar. The heavenly choir ready to back up the lead vocalist – Michael, the war angel with his Mohawk, black leather jacket and boots who with the hardcore voice begins to sing HOOSSAANNAAA!!!

The drums are rolling, the screaming crowd  goes wild, Michael lets out a great roar hat comes down to earth as thunder; the special effects, the guitar solos, the twenty- four elders chanting Hallelujah! Hallelujah!! Hallelujah!!!
The saints, while the saints are rocking out backstage. While God is seated on His throne, tapping and nodding His head to such beautiful melody in the VIP lounge. For God loves rock ‘n’ roll! Whether its metal, Goth, alternative or grunge; God is a big fan of music and can use any form of medium to pass on any message.

Believe?

Yes. Yes you should. Hip- pop may have the punch lines. Afro may have those funky beats. Reggae may as well use up the entire crank and weed and rainbow outfit but rock – rock is poetic, passionate and deep and so is God. The God of rock.

With a band name that sounds like a onetime thing although barely a year old  i know they are here to stay, they are in fact here for all or nothing like their first single. I first heard of the band and their performance at the second metal and romance in June.

IN THE BEGINING

1Last Autograph (One Last Autograph) as they prefer to be written“1” not “ONE” was founded when Chike met Tolu and  Judah through a mutual friend who was also a rock fan  in Badagry , they spoke about starting a rock band and eventually performed at the second  Metal and romance in June after which Tolu left leaving Chike and Judah to source for more band mates, they later found  Sam , then Casey then Mario who had similar interest with them and the band was officially born.

They always had  issues apart from finances, they had problems with rehearsal ground as they couldn’t find a stable one especially with band mates living far apart like the guitarist Sam who had to come all the way from  Ikorodu for rehearsals

They are in the process of being signed by a record label but currently managed and co-managed by Sagay Reginald and Famutimi Femi

LIST OF SONGS

The band’s feature with rock artist clay was the first I heard from them and  like most people I was impressed and especially taken by the growl, we could say it was the first time a growl was officially heard in a Nigerian song and i commend them for that. Personally i can’t wait to hear the song performed live at least to see growl and drum come to Life.

MUSIC STYLE AND INFLUENCES

“Down” featuring clay was said to be in the post hardcore genre, they band has also said they are in the genre and also punk

They said they have been influenced by quite a number for foreign band , A day to remember, All Time Low, Blink 182, Nirvana, For Today, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Yellowcard , Of Mice and Men, Memphis May Fire, Sleeping With Sirens, Crown The Empire, Red, Switchfoot, and Daughtry

1 LAST AUTOGRAPH

when we asked the lead singer what 1LA means this is what he has to say

"1 last autograph symbolizes this unsatisfactory nature of man, one more this and one more that, we just never get enough. We just keep pushing our limits trying to create something new something worthy of an autograph. like we have car companies come up with new models, movies getting crazier, artist being expressive, porn getting more seductive. this world is just fucking crazy, the moment we hold on to some new stuff, a better one comes. in a nut shell the essence of life being more creative never having enough. that is what makes us want to keep on living"

i personally love this band, maybe its because i see the struggle they have to go through to be heard and yet they keep on going, maybe its harder because of the region we are and the fact that the rock genre is a growing genre here, sometimes i define uniques, creativity and good stuff as something an average Nigerian wouldn't appreciate, so in my own words i see the band at the last autograph i need to collect or have that would last forever, that one last thing that when you get you'll need no more, i hope to see them sellout venues in a short time but that would only happen if we hold on to this genre that we love and let it be heard

The Rockaz world Questions
We love to ask two questions and this originated from the Rockaz World Whatsapp Group

1)     If an orphanage needed your nude to survive would you present it?
2)     Do you prefer Yellow Garri or Ijebu garri

When we asked the band mates this was what we got from those that answer                     (^ _-)

Question 1

Chike said " he would send" .So yay for the orphans? How much would that fetch?

Judah said "i'll go nude if the orphan was a chic and was in front of him" and so the orphan got pregnant , married judah and gave birth to eleven more

Sam said "i will love to send nudes, since its for charity" . so the some orphans went on to be doctors and some reality starts

Casey said "yes i would"  now that is a hero

Mario said "NO"  after which the orphans left his apartment sad and fell over the bridge

And the managers Sagay and Femi refused to share the nude so the orphans died of starvation

Question 2

Chike said "ijebu garri for life"
Judah said "I prefer ijebu Garri"
Sam said "i love ijebu garri"
Casey said "i love ijebu garri"
Mario said "ijebu oh"

Comedy rock

Some of you may have known of this genre for a while but i just found this out as a genre and am loving it especially after listening to "BEELZEBOSS" by  TENACIOUS D from album THE PICK OF DESTINY . its a freaking hilarious genre as the name implies and its fun. its basically just the lyrics that changes and the  best part is that you can enjoy it in heavy metal, metal, hard and any other thing your heads can carry
Comedy Rock is rock music that has designed to poke fun at rock traditions, as well as mainstream society. It is humorous both in its musical attack and in its lyrics. Sometimes comedy rock can be sophomoric -- its godfather, Frank Zappa, loved jokes about fecal matter and big boobs -- but at its best, it cleverly skewers clichés and conventions.
