Grunge rock is a sub genre of the popular alternative rock influenced by hardcore punk and heavy metal giving it a harder sound. it can be recognized by its us of sludgy and distorted guitar sound, moody or apathetic lyrics. it became popular the early nineties and is said to have popularized the punk rock genre with band like nirvana, Soundgarden and Alice in chains gaining media attention with releases of songs like "Never-mind - Nirvana" and "Dirt - Alice In chains"
the genre its self seems to have
died down a little with starting bands no longer doing more works or disbanded
but not without influencing new sounds like post-grunge and nu metal which are
sub genres of this sound
